Good motion answers a question the user was about to ask: where did that go, what just happened, what is connected to what. Decoration answers nothing and costs attention.
Duration and easing
Keep it short and let the easing carry the character. A long animation is a toll you charge the user every single time.
If the motion isn't explaining, it's interrupting.
