LOOTY's approach? It’s as clever as it is daring. We use LiDAR technology to create super-detailed 3D scans of artifacts displayed in places like the British Museum. Think of it as a digital heist where nothing gets physically stolen but everything is captured. These scans then become the basis for augmented reality (AR) experiences, NFTs, and digital installations, reimagining these artifacts in their original cultural and historical settings.
One standout projects is the Rosetta Stone, a key piece of ancient Egyptian heritage that's currently in the British Museum. Through AR tech, LOOTY has virtually taken the Rosetta Stone back to Rashid, Egypt. Now, using AR-enabled devices and apps like Snapchat, you can see it in its original context. This digital repatriation restores the artifact to its rightful place and tells a fuller, more accurate story by piecing together its historical puzzle.
But our work goes way beyond creating cool digital replicas. By leveraging cutting-edge tech, we challenge the traditional gatekeepers of cultural heritage and open up new ways for people to engage with history. Our use of AR, 3D design, and Web3 tech represents a major shift in how we interact with historical artifacts.
This isn’t just about fancy tech, though. It’s about representation and ownership in the digital age. By digitally reclaiming these artifacts, LOOTY puts a spotlight on the broader issue of cultural restitution and calls on museums to confront their colonial pasts. This is more than just returning objects; it’s about restoring dignity and agency to the cultures from which they were taken.
"Technology is a tool for liberation," one of our team members often says. "We’re using it to give a voice to the voiceless and to bring our heritage back to life, where it belongs."
For LOOTY, reclaiming narratives isn't just a theme; it’s a movement. It's about correcting historical wrongs and celebrating the untold success stories and rich complexities of African heritage. By taking control of these stories, LOOTY honors cultural heroes and challenges the long-standing narratives that have overlooked African contributions and achievements.
In the coming months, LOOTY plans to dive even deeper into this mission. We’re creating a platform for sharing insights, stories, and historical retrospectives. Expect thought-provoking articles, enlightening events, and a space dedicated to celebrating the rich tapestry of African history.
"Our aim is to create a digital hub that connects people to their heritage," explains another team member. "It’s about education, empowerment, and rewriting the narrative in our own words."
Reclaiming these narratives isn’t confined to Black History Month; it’s an ongoing effort to recognize and appreciate the myriad contributions of African cultures throughout history. As LOOTY continues this journey, we invite global communities to join in embracing, educating, and empowering each other through the stories that shape our collective identity.
By reclaiming art and power, LOOTY not only addresses past injustices but also sets a path for future generations. In a world where digital technology can bridge gaps and right historical wrongs, LOOTY stands as a beacon of hope and innovation. Our work reminds us that while digital tools can capture and remix images, the true essence of creativity and cultural heritage lies in the stories we choose to tell and preserve.
"We’re not just about reclaiming art; we’re about reclaiming identity,"
