There is a moment, using a well-made tool, when the tool vanishes and only the work remains. It is the opposite of friction — a kind of transparency that takes enormous effort to build and almost none to notice.
Designing for flow
Interfaces that disappear share a few traits: they are honest about state, generous with feedback, and quiet about everything else. They do not ask to be admired. They ask only to be used, and then forgotten in the best way.
Make the obvious thing the easy thing, then say nothing more.
The temptation, always, is to add. A new control, a new mode, one more affordance. Craft is mostly the practice of removal — of trusting the user enough to leave the room.
